For many, a BB gun means target practice and even role playing or military simulations. No longer just plastic children's toys, these guns today are cut and weighted to look and feel just like the real models and can give anyone the feeling of truly being in combat. In some circumstances a BB gun may even be used for military training; it's not unusual for private military contractors to use them in training facilities so their soldiers get real training. Unlike a paintball gun, a BB gun doesn't leave a mark on one's clothes or equipment so they're easier to use and they resemble the real guns one would use in combat or protection services.
Minding the Risk
But a BB gun still carries some risk, even though it is technically considered a toy. Improper use can result in injury, sometimes serious. Even adults can mishandle a BB gun and often dismiss the danger they may pose. Those pellets they shoot out may not have the speed or shape of a bullet, but any projectile carries some risk! This is one thing to remember; never shoot anyone at very close range as the BB or pellet can do quite a bit of damage.Exposed skin also has special risk when shot at with a BB gun. The pellet can lodge into the skin and in some cases, require a doctor to cut it out! This too is why you should never shoot at close range, but extra precaution is needed when someone is missing safety gear. When using a BB gun in combat training or simulation, you want to wear protective clothing, goggles, a helmet, and gloves. Both men and women should protect the groin area as well. It's also important to be careful of the risk when handling a BB gun. Make sure the safety is on when not in use and never put your finger over the trigger until you're ready to fire. Even if the safety is on, don't play with the BB gun and jokingly aim it at someone or pull the trigger when it's aimed at them. It's always better to be safe than sorry!
Minding Children
Sometimes a parent will buy a BB gun for their child, reasoning that it's a toy and therefore safe. This can be very shortsighted, as it's very different from a soft dart gun. Younger children especially don't understand the risks of the BB or the pellet and may think of it as being as dangerous as a water gun. There have been countless injuries caused to children because of a BB gun, so you need to make this decision carefully. Monitor your child's use and supervise them at all times.Using a BB gun can be safer than a paintball gun and other simulation weapons, but it's not without its own risks. Be mindful of these risks and don't dismiss them, and no doubt you'll be perfectly safe when using your own BB gun.
